A Capability Architecture is a list of defined concepts that interdepend on one another. If put in place to the right standards and in the right configuration these capabilities collectively provide an architectural design that is able to make ‘something’ possible.
What it is
- A governance and design instrument
- A vision of the target state for a system
- A communication tools for gaining alignment over concepts
- A thematically grouped list of the abilities a system (such as a data ecosystem) must possess for to achieve its intended outcomes
- A set of definitions, explanations and dependencies between the listed capabilities
What it isn’t
- A blueprint for how to technically implement the data ecosystem
- It does not map dependencies between capabilities, but may make passing reference to these
- A plan for delivering the capabilities
- Technology-specific or methodology-specific
- A cookie-cutter template
